Run the installer with default settings, "Install Client", unchanged directory to the Roaming folder (Minecraft itself is in the Program Files (x86) folder) From the Minecraft Depot site, I use the link to go to the Minecraft Forge site and get the "Recommended" 1.8 - 11.jar Installer. I've made no adjustments to anything in the game, I simply run it to make sure it works before moving along to Forge.
